Trans-Titiwangsa V1 (via Ulu Kinta SAS Dam)

Distance: 37km
Elevation Gain: 3,650m
Rated: 8.5/10

Trans-Titiwangsa V1, a hiking trail which covers 3 of the tallest Peninsular Malaysia mountain. Gunung Korbu (G2), Gunung Gayong (G4) & Gunung Yong Belar (G3). Typically, most hiker will start their hike from Yong Belar side as it will make the hike easier. Since Yong Belar elevation is much higher compared to Korbu trailhead, there would be much less elevation gain from Yong Belar. The hike usually takes 4-5 days.

However, to start from Korbu side first, things do get tougher as now you have to climb Korbu first before proceeding to V1 route. Also please note, when doing V1, there won't be any water source between LWP of Korbu to Camp H2O which is after coming down from Gunung Junction!! (there is one at Camp Cerek but it will take you 20min down for it, so avoid it at all cost!)

The trail here is quite open but not very well marked. Some part of the trail can be quite badly overgrown and plenty of thorns, especially around Camp H2O.

The hike from Korbu to Gayong is covered in this blog:

After climbing the steep hill of Korbu, things just don't end as it is. Once you reach Gayong, u-turn and walk 5minutes to get back to Simpang Proton. Now the trail from here onward will get a little rawer and having a good navigation skill is really a plus (yes, there are markers along the route for V1 but is not often as compare to KorGa route)

I don't have a picture of Simpang Proton, but here a reference
Once at Simpang Proton (15.7km), there will be a junction to your right and it usually closed off with a few pieces of wood as this is to prevent hiker who only doing KorGa from accidentally going into V1 route. Here, turn right and start heading to Camp Cerek which is around 30-50minutes depending on your pace.

Camp Cerek
As mention, there is a water point here but unless you are camping here, it is best you avoid it at all cost as it a 20minutes walk DOWN, so you going to need to walk back UP after that!

From Camp Cerek (16.7km), just head straight to your next destination, Gunung Junction and this is where the fun begins too! The constant up and down will be mental torture if you are not well-prepared for this route. After a series of up and down (mainly down), you will start to climb back up the steep route of Gunung Junction where you will literally have to pull yourself up against the tree root which is similar to the last part Yong Yap route.

Once you reach Gunung Junction (19.5km), you can choose to rest here or if you still have daylight, do continue on another 10 minutes to reach Junction View Point where you will have an unobstructed view of the Titiwangsa Mountain Range!

Junction View Point

After Gunung Junction, now it a very steep downhill toward Camp H2O. Be warn, it is very steep and slippery when it rain (if you come from Yong Belar side, climbing this part of the Gunung Junction is going to be your most hellish climb!) After roughy 2 hours or more, again depending on your pace, you will finally reach Camp H2O. Before Camp H2O, you would come across a beautiful "mini-waterfall garden" if you still have daylight.

Camp H2O (22.5km) is a camp site where we took our dinner and quite a long rest here. Eat and drink as much as you can from the river here and refuel to the max! As from here onward, it going to be a long climb up to Yong Belar. It not as steep but very long!

Camp H2O

Camp H2O Site

Once refuel, cross the river and start the climb up to  your next check point which is Camp Kuali. Also note, 40-50 minutes climb up, you will reach Puncak H2O first. After that, less than an hour, another camp site which has no name to it. Altogether, there roughly 2 big false peak (The first one is known as Yong Belar false peak and it view here is very nice too! The second one has a big border rock.)

After all that up and down climb, you will eventually reach Camp Kuali (27.5km). There is water point here and you can refill here as the next water point will be Camp Periuk Tudung at Yong Belar (Camp Kasut have too but also required to walk down to it and tend to be avoided)

Camp Kuali
Camp Kuali
After Camp Kuali, this will be your last big climb up to Yong Belar peak (28km), which is the last peak of the route. You do reach a junction first before heading to the peak so do take note not to take the left turn first as you will miss Yong Belar peak!

Yong Belar - V1 Junction
The junction is not obvious especially in the dark, so please take note!

The hike of Yong Belar is covered in this blog:

For the reversed version, basically is just the reversed of the this whole blog. The only different now is that you do not have climb the steep Korbu and the never ending uphill of Yong Belar, instead it all downhill plus the climb to Yong Belar is consider easy. The only tough section will be the climb up from Camp H2O to Gunung Junction as you will be carrying full load of water and it a very steep uphill with plenty of section require you to pull yourself up against the tree roots!

The video below belong to our Trans-Titiwangsa V2 but part of the V1 route can be seen in here too for your reference.

The total hiking distance may look short but because the trail technically, be prepared for what can be a long hours of hiking in the forest. The trail may not very raw and can be actually quite clear, do take care as tiredness can cause you to take the wrong route unintentionally!

Whether you are camping or daypacking this route, is definitely an achievement for anyone who can complete this route!
